All he could see was a sea of blood.

It took some time for his mind to fully process what he was looking at, but the Cyborg Ninja had left his mark on the hallway in front of his lab. It was like something pulled straight out of a nightmare: blood splatter covered the walls and floor, and there was a sickly sweet smell in the air.

He had to force himself to keep walking. The small added boost of courage given to him by the stealth camo could only get him so far, but he had to get out of there. And there was only one exit.

*wakes up with a start and sits up quickly, still reeling a bit from the dream*

I hope this works...

Errr, hello, I...my name is Hal Emmerich. ...Doctor. Doctor Emmerich. I arrived here recently, and... Well, I found this phone. But it's more than just a phone...it has all sorts of different, complex capabilities, it even functions as a radio--

--A-anyway, I thought it would be worth a try. To see if anyone answered, that is. If there is anyone on the other end of this message that would be able to explain...my, your, our situation...it would be appreciated.

[muttered] It feels like I'm just leaving a message in cyberspace...

[Character Name] Doctor Hal Emmerich, Ph.D. Also goes by Otacon.
[Canon] Metal Gear Solid
[Point Taken from Canon] End of MGS4

[Age] Otacon actually doesn't get a canon birthdate, unlike most characters =/ I'm. Gonna go with 39 by the end of MGS4 canon.
[Gender] Male
[Sexual Orientation] Heterosexual.

[Eye Color] Blue
[Hair Color] Brown
[Height] Uh...5'10" ish?
[Other] Wears glasses! Probably looks a little older than he is, depending on who you talk to. Nerd thin, etc etc.
[Clothing] PICTURE for great justice because I'm lazy 8|

[Background] After the death of his mother, Hal's father remarried to a British woman with a daughter of her own, who was named Emma. She and Hal grew very close in the short amount of time that they knew each other. Shortly after, his stepmother seduced him, and they began an affair.

Once his father found out, he drowned himself in the pool, nearly dragging Emma down with him. Emma expected Hal to save her, but he didn't know it was happening as he was with his stepmother at the time. Because of this, Emma claimed to always hate her brother. His departure from the family didn't help matters at all. He got into science due to his love of anime at the time (which also gave birth to the codename he would use later; "Otacon" is short for "Otaku Convention"), and went on to earn a PhD in engineering and was later hired on by ArmsTech, Inc. for the Metal Gear REX project. Hal jumped at the chance to create an actual robot like the ones that frequently appeared in the anime he liked. He was lead to believe that Metal Gear was purely for defensive purposes, but in truth it was a nuclear doomsday weapon.

The one who finally broke the news to him was Solid Snake, when he rescued Otacon from the cyborg ninja (Grey Fox, Frank Jeager). Feeling thoroughly duped and guilty for creating what was essentially a walking nuclear missile, Otacon resigned to help Snake destroy Metal Gear REX from the sidelines, mostly in the form of information about Shadow Moses and where to find ammo and rations...unless it had something to do with killing Sniper Wolf. He'd become smitten with his captor, who he deemed to be "a good person", and was distraught when Snake killed her. Still, Otacon eventually came to terms with her, himself, and his position in life.

After the Shadow Moses incident, the schematics of REX were placed on the black market by Revolver Ocelot, prompting Otacon and Nastasha Romaneko to set up the anti Metal Gear organization Philanthropy. Shortly, after, Otacon found Snake in Alaska, and convinced him to join. They set up a partnership and close friendship, as they destroyed and sabotaged the many Metal Gear REX derivatives being developed all over the world.

Two years after Shadow Moses, Otacon received an anonymous hint on a REX derivative named Metal Gear RAY being transported through the Hudson river aboard a Navy tanker. The operation turned out to be a set-up by The Patriots, who used the tanker's destruction to framed Philanthropy as an eco-terrorism organization. Otacon managed to sail to the sunken tanker on a small boat, rescuing Snake and replacing him with Liquid Snake's body. Having faked Snake's death, the two went underground to bide their time and continue their work out of the public eye.

Otacon and Snake finally came out of hiding two years after the Tanker Incident when they learned that Emma Emmerich was working on the off-shore cleanup facility called Big Shell. Emma secretly informed Otacon of a new Metal Gear weapon's construction within the Shell's core called Arsenal Gear. Posing as an architect for the Shell, Otacon infiltrated the facility along with Snake, posing as a SEAL lieutenant, in order to rescue her and stop the weapon's construction. Raiden, a member of FOXHOUND they met along the way, was able to rescue Emma from within the Shell and reunite the two. However, when he learned Emma was actual an engineer for The Patriots, Otacon was not so amused, and the two spent a lot of time bickering over her involvement in their family's longstanding affiliation with nuclear weaponry. The two eventually made up, but, along the way, Emma was fatally wounded by Vamp. She died in her brother's arms shortly after implanting a worm cluster into Arsenal Gear's central AI (GW), which they assumed would destroy it. Otacon fell into deep despair over the loss of his sister, but Snake encouraged him to continue on and rescue the other hostages in the Shell. He was successful, and remained in contact with Raiden via Codec until he defeated Solidus Snake.

When Snake and Otacon met up again, Otacon had with him a disk that contained information on the data of The Patriots' names and whereabouts. One of the names was that of Philanthropy's biggest contributor, but stranger still was that, apparently, all twelve members had been dead for over a hundred years. Later, they found out that this information was a false lead.

After the Manhattan Incident, Snake and Otacon disappeared to live a quiet life. Sometime after, Raiden was able to rescue Sunny, the daughter of Olga Gurlukovich, from The Patriots. Otacon adopted her and raised her into quite the computer genius. In 2014, Roy Campbell contracted a rapidly aging Snake to take down Liquid Ocelot. Snake and Otacon reluctantly agreed, with Snake heading into battle while Otacon assisted him via the Metal Gear Mk. II from his ship, the Nomad. Their first mission in the East was a failure, and Snake went on to rescue Naomi Hunter in South America. Otacon and Naomi had a short romantic involvement aboard the Nomad, but he was crushed when she left and rejoined Liquid Ocelot and Vamp. On Shadow Moses, Naomi confronted Raiden, Otacon, and Snake after Vamp's defeat, revealing that she had terminal cancer suppressed only by her Nanomachines. She injected herself with a shot that suppressed the Nanomachines, effectively committing suicide. Otacon was devastated after watching yet another woman he loved die, but pulled it together in time to escape Shadow Moses.

Later, Otacon assisted Snake in dismantling GW, which had been restored by Liquid Ocelot as a means to control The Patriots, aboard Outer Haven. After Liquid Ocelot was defeated for good and Snake failed to follow through with his plan to kill himself, Otacon insisted on staying with Snake to chronicle the rest of Snake's life.

[Personality] Somewhat excitable, socially awkward, and even downright nerdy, Hal "Otacon" Emmerich isn't what you'd call a people person. He isn't used to being around a lot of people, let alone talking to them, and is nervous or uncertain around a lot of complete strangers. However, for someone who once claimed that he believed he would never understand people, he sure has learned how to interact like a normal person from time to time.

Still, Otacon is a generally timid person, and, though he's a dedicated friend once he finally knows someone well enough, it takes a while for him to warm up to people (although it helps if he decides that they're a good person at some point). He's willing to tell his friends off if need be, but he's not about to get into a fight anytime soon. Some may say he cries a lot...and maybe so, but he's really just an emotional guy.

There's no denying that Otacon is an intelligent person, and he sometimes becomes the go-to guy when a complicated subject needs some explaining. He's willing and able to do so when he needs to.

Otacon has a huge guilt complex, the largest part of which is survivor guilt. Hal is always the survivor, and feels a lot of guilt over the fact that so many people close to him have somehow died and left him alive and well. He's also guilty over his involvement in the weapons business; he believes that scientists always get used, despite often having good intentions, and by no stretch is he an exception to that.

Through the good and bad, Otacon is dedicated, hard working, and a little bit obsessive at times. Despite his social fallacies, he's a pretty good guy, albeit terrible at small talk with strangers. Despite his timid nature, he has a certain amount of fortitude, and can continue on through rough times. Although he's accidentally failed at it in the past, Otacon strives to use science and his creations to protect people and for the good of mankind.

[Specialties/Abilities] He's smart! He's a capable engineer and the brains of the operation and all those awesome things. Also, he can build robots and hack computers without leaving a paper trail. Otacon is very computer savvy, yes. Put him into a physical fight and he's totally boned, though. XD

[Affection] Anything is fine, though it will cause him to get all embarrassed and nerdy at you. Be warned, if you are a nice and pretty lady, he may crush on you. Hard :(
[Fighting] ajkfslf Otacon is a lover, not a fighter. And he sucks at that "lover" thing, too. Uhhh if for some reason you want your character to fight Otacon, talk to me. Maybe I'll be feeling a bit of extra schadenfreude that day and we can work something out.

[Other Facts] Everyone he loves dies. I mean uh. Don't ask him to cook for you. Or about Vamp. You're just asking for it if you do.
